December’s Full Moon and New Moon may have been and gone, but this month will see another celestial event before the year is out. A ‘black moon’ is set to take place on 30 December 2024 – named as such because it is the second new moon to happen this month, which isn’t a usual occurrence. And yep, you guessed it, it’s bringing with it some pretty big energy.
What is the black moon?
What’s a black moon, you ask? Well, just like two full moons in one month might be called a ‘blue moon’, when two new moons occur within one month it’s referred to as a ‘black moon’. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it happens around once every 2.5 years.
In case you’re unfamiliar, the New Moon is one of the eight moon phases – the New Moon marks the start of a moon cycle, when the sun and the moon are on the same side of the Earth. On a new moon day, the moon isn’t visible from Earth (hence, all new moons are sometimes referred to as a ‘black moon’), because the illuminated part of the moon is facing the sun. So, you won’t be able to actually see tonight’s new moon. Next up will be the crescent moon, and so on and so forth.
When is the black moon in the UK?

What zodiac sign is December’s black moon in?
Tonight’s black moon takes place in Capricorn – the earth sign associated with goal-setting, ambition and determination. Is there any better time to set an intention?
December 2024’s black moon meaning
Though the sky will be mysteriously dark, a new moon actually represents new beginnings – so let that New Year energy start to sink in.
As astrologer Francesca Oddie shared on Instagram, it marks a moment to let inspiration take hold – but she cautions: “ambition without action is just a wish.”
“This new moon asks – what are you ready to build? No shortcuts, no rush, just inspired flow! Journal, walk, stare at the ceiling – whatever lets your mind wander. Inspiration tends to slip in through the cracks of stillness,” she writes. “2025 starts with the seeds you plant now – make sure you start strong. Stay true to yourself!”
