Lucy Dacus is giving away $10,000 for trans people to use toward gender-affirming surgery.
The “Night Shift” singer posted to X on Wednesday morning asking people to respond with links to crowdfunding campaigns for gender-affirming surgery, and promising to “give away 10k in $500 increments until it’s gone.”
“if other people wanna scroll through and make donations, please do,” she added. “the government will never be the source of our validation or protection, we have to do it ourselves.”

The singer’s announcement comes just days after Donald Trump was once again sworn in as president, and after he signed an executive order declaring that there are only two genders —male and female as assigned at birth. In addition to redefining gender on a federal level, the executive order also targets X gender markers on U.S. passports, as well as protections for incarcerated trans people. While the exact impact of the document is yet to be seen, since executive orders can be limited in their scope, many LGBTQ+ advocates are sounding the alarm and promising legal action against the Trump administration.
Dacus has long been a vocal advocate for queer people, as a queer musician herself. In a 2023 interview with Them, she expressed a desire for “every gay and trans person to have the opportunity to be inarticulate, stupid, and unexceptional.” “I want to see more cool art by trans people and non-white people, and also poor people,” she said, adding that “many people are unjustly disprivileged by needing to work to the bone.” With this GoFundMe giveaway, she’s truly putting her money where her mouth is.
The musician also served as a producer, alongside her Boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, on the debut record by trans singer-songwriter jasmine.4.t. Dacus will also be hitting the road with jasmine.4.t on tour this spring, alongside Katie Gavin of MUNA.
