I realise that Rihanna takes style cues from no one but — and maybe this is just all the Real Housewives of New York City I’ve been watching — there’s something about this denim jacket under the leather trench look that is screaming J.Crew-era Jenna Lyons to me. And with the black square glasses and sleek hair? Come on, tell me I’m wrong.

In case you missed it, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were spotted together in Los Angeles on January 28 (incidentally the ninth anniversary of ANTI, her last album drop). The singer’s ensemble took a novel approach to the Canadian tuxedo, trading a denim shirt for a denim jacket, buttoned all the way up to the neck. She also wore baggy jeans in a slightly lighter wash with high-heeled snakeskin boots and topped the whole ensemble off with a floor-length black leather trench coat. Ri kept the accessories low-key, with just a pair of stud earrings and a couple gold choker necklaces.

Back when Jenna Lyons was the creative director of J.Crew, this kind of look would have fit exactly into her personal uniform. She wore side-parted straight hair, a striped or collared shirt, and square-rimmed black glasses exactly like the pair Rihanna rocked in LA.
That said, Rihanna’s personal style is still an entirely different story. Unlike the RHONY star, Rihanna has no personal style uniform, unless looking amazing in things that no other human being would be able to pull off could be called a uniform. Just a few weeks earlier, Rihanna started a whole new Uggs trend by wearing a pair embroidered with images of a tiger and dragon as an alternative to the basic brown. In fact, the only trend Rihanna has said she regrets wearing was “the baggy jeans with the panties out. What the fuck was I thinking, bro?”
