Sam Gold’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, is headed into its final 16 performances on Broadway — and for this cast, it’ll likely feel like the end of an era.
“We would have lunch together every day. We were working in Brooklyn at the rehearsal studio,” Zegler told Teen Vogue in her MOMENT cover interview late last year. “We’d all go to Whole Foods and get our lunch and come back and eat together. And it was just the bits, the bits began. We love the bits.” Connor added that the cast, “all pile into my dressing room.” Zegler laughed, “We are all crammed in there, but it is, I’ve never laughed harder in my life, genuinely. It’s just so much fun.”
The close-knit cast have clearly bonded over the past few months of rehearsals and shows. Photographer Emilio Madrid went backstage before and during a recent performance of the revival to bring us a behind the scenes look at that chemistry as the end of the play’s run draws near. In the photos, you’ll see the cast playing around on sets, helping each other settle into character, and throwing themselves into their roles. “I think the chemistry spills out into the show and into the performance,” Connor told Teen Vogue.
Final seats have just been released today, Feb. 3, with 16 shows left to catch the magic of the exhilarating adaptation. Below, dive into Romeo + Juliet.
