We’re very excited about Issa Rae’s latest comedy movie One Of Them Days. She’s teamed up with Insecure writer Syreeta Singleton once more to bring us a “buddy comedy” about two Black women trying to make ends meet after one of their boyfriends spends their rent money. In fact, they must make $1,500 by 6pm, or they’ll face eviction.
Starring (and executive produced by) Keke Palmer and SZA, we know this is an absolute must-watch.
As well as being described as a love letter to Black women, it also champions the power of female friendship. According to Issa Rae, the movie’s writer Syreeta “writes the best female characters, the best female friendships.”
“Given this was set in L.A. and was a buddy comedy I haven’t seen in awhile, I just immediately identified with the characters” she told Geeks of Color.
Here’s everything we know so far about One Of Them Days.

One Of Them Days plot
The synopsis for the movie reads as follows: “Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have One of Them Days. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.”
Keke has spoken out about SZA’s talent, and how proud she was to have her on the project. “A lot of people think musicians can’t act, but she’s just naturally hilarious,” she told The Cut. “As vulnerable and excitable and eccentric as SZA is, she also is very serious, very brilliant, and a focused person.” It sounds like the best pal chemistry on screen was carefully built upon behind the scenes, as Keke insists that she went out of her way to make sure herself and SZA had the time to hang out and cultivate that dynamic before filming.
