Chappell Roan took the Grammys 2025 stage on Sunday with the ultimate clown hoedown, marking her first appearance at the award show.
The first-time Grammy nominee performed her hit song “Pink Pony Club” on February 2, 2025, during the 67th annual award show, with a campy country theme that only she could do. To start the performance, Roan sat on a giant pink pony surrounded by clowns in dramatic Western outfits and makeup. The stage was decked out with old-timey billboards and wagons, as Roan danced around belting out the song.
“Boys in my high school would call gay people clowns, so I started doing white makeup because I was like: If you’re gonna call me a clown, then I’m going to be the best clown you’ve ever seen,” Roan said in the recent Faces of Music documentary on Hulu. “It’s gonna be undeniable that I’m gay and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Roan wore a multicolored corset top with shorts, cowboy boots, and a feather cowboy hat over her long red hair. It was a major outfit change from the beautiful Jean Paul Gaultier gown and combat boots she wore on the red carpet.

“Pink Pony Club” was one of her first releases and is an ode to her time in Los Angeles — specifically West Hollywood — and the creative scene that inspired her. The choice comes after the LA fires ravaged the city and were in line with the theme of dedicating the evening to those who lost their homes.
After being nominated for the first time and having a record-breaking year, Chappell Roan shared her thoughts on the milestone via Instagram last week. Sharing a selfie, Roan wrote in the caption that she was feeling “very emo” ahead of the Grammys.
“My heart feels warm and fuzzy with all the support I have been given this past year,” she wrote. “I hope you can understand that this has been incredible and scary and spiritual and confusing. I’ve been crying tears of joy and grief and feeling loved and lonely and free.”
She continued: “And girl no matter what, just know when I’m up on stage, all I’m really feeling in my heart is love to the queer community especially those in places where it is unsafe to be yourself. I see you <3.”
