The Diagnosis:
Dear Shay,
Dark circles and under eye bags are challenging to treat, there is no one product that will cure every dark circle but the good news is there are some treatments and processes that do help. Depending on the cause of the dark circle there are options that include skincare and sometimes deeper treatments are needed. The right approach depends on the root cause, whether it’s fluid retention, thinning skin, or fat displacement.
What causes under-eye bags?
Under-eye bags can result from several factors, including genetics, ageing and lifestyle choices. As we age, the tissues around the eyes weaken, leading to a more pronounced appearance of fat pads. Fluid retention, lack of sleep, or hormonal changes can also contribute. Additionally, allergies and sinus issues may exacerbate puffiness, and lifestyle habits like smoking or excessive sun exposure can break down collagen, making the area appear more hollow or saggy.
Anything I can do to avoid exacerbating under-eye bags?
Yes, there are steps you can take to minimise their appearance:
- Prioritise sleep: Ensure you’re getting seven hours of unbroken sleep to prevent puffiness.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and limit salt to avoid fluid retention.
- Protect your skin: Use a high-quality SPF around the eyes to prevent collagen breakdown.
- Gentle eye care: Avoid rubbing your eyes excessively, as this can weaken the skin and lead to swelling.
- Manage allergies: Treat seasonal allergies promptly to reduce puffiness.
Any recommendations for treating under-eye bags?
- Topical products: Look for eye creams with caffeine to reduce puffiness, hyaluronic acid to plump the skin, or peptides to stimulate collagen.
- Home remedies: Cold compresses can help reduce swelling temporarily.
- In-clinic treatments: For longer-lasting results, treatments like tear trough fillers, polynucleotides, radiofrequency skin tightening, or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be highly effective.
- Lifestyle tweaks: Limit alcohol and ensure your head is slightly elevated while sleeping to prevent fluid pooling under the eyes.
Consistency is key, and the best results often come from a tailored approach combining at-home care and professional advice.
