This is the million-dollar question, and the truth is we don’t know yet. After season 2 ended in December 202, it took no time for HBO to tease that the show was headed to Asia, with Thailand being announced as the final location in early 2023.
As far as potential locations for The White Lotus season 4, the rumor mill is churning. Reddit users are speculating about both Chile and Colombia. There’s also chatter about Egypt or Mexico.
Previously, White has admitted to potentially wanting to shoot a season of The White Lotus in Australia. “My dream would be to hit every continent, so yeah, this is like its own continent basically. We kind of have to come to Australia if we keep going,” he said. “It would be so fun. Obviously, there’s a huge wealth of talent here, and the beauty is inarguable, so it feels like it checks all the boxes.”
The creator also admitted on the series’ official podcast that season 3 was originally intended to be filmed in Japan, so revisiting that idea could be an option. “We were scouting in Thailand, and Thailand was kind of just a stalking horse because I really wanted to shoot in Japan because I’d had more fun in Japan the times I’d visited,” White said.
“We didn’t know much about Thailand,” series producer David Bernad added to People. “I had been there once before, but when we boiled down countries that worked weather-wise, had a tax rebate, that were film friendly, and really, it was just only Thailand in that region. So, we were like, oh, we’ll go to Thailand first and we’ll go on to Japan.”
Speaking to Deadline, however, executive vice president of HBO programming Francesca Orsi said that “chances are somewhere in Europe” and that the team already had “some countries on the map.” However, she added there’s “nothing to report on until they actually go locations scouting.”
What we do know is that despite many people’s wishes to get a wintry White Lotus season, we will likely stick to balmy tropical weather because, well, Mike White hates the cold. “I feel confident we’ll never do a season in the cold,” Bernad said on the Bill Simmons podcast. “Never say never, but I would be surprised.”
The White Lotus does have a partnership with The Four Seasons, so season 4 will be filmed at one of the resort’s branches around the world — and there’s currently only 133, so that can narrow it down. (If we believe it’s Europe, there are only 19 there…)
