Is the Met Gala Curse Real? Learn About the Supposed Bad Luck Charm for Couples

The first Monday in May is here, which means celebs will take the Met Gala 2025 carpet for fashion’s biggest night. While it’s actually a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for spectators, the Met Gala is all about the clothes and the celebrities wearing them. And while we get a comprehensive look at the carpet, there’s a lot of unknown lore about the Met Gala, thanks in part to the no-phones-allowed policy inside the event. One of those Met secrets is starting to creep out, and it involves a curse.

Yes, you read that right. The Met Gala curse applies to couples who attend the event together; apparently, if you walk the red carpet and smile for the camera with your partner, you may be headed for a breakup sooner than you planned. Even if you meet up with your partner at the festivities or after party, it’s apparently bad luck. Ok, I know it sounds like a hoax, but I obviously came with receipts.

A non-comprehensive list of now-separated celebrity couples who seem to be victims of the Met Gala curse: FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson went together in 2015, Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston each attended in 2016, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik lasted five more years after attending the ceremony in 2016, and Selena Gomez and The Weekend hit the carpet in 2017.

The list goes on: Hailey Bieber and Shawn Mendes, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, and Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse all attended the event in 2018. 2019’s Met Gala curse landed on former couple Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. In 2021, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello showed up as a couple. In 2024, Cardi B and Offset held hands at a Met Gala after party, only to be off on their on-and-off-again relationship in the summer. Last but not least, Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter went to the Gala last year, and recently broke up.

Like Shawn Mendes, Kim Kardashian has been a victim of the curse twice: Kardashian and flash-in-the-pan partner Pete Davidson went together in 2022. She also attended the event with Ye numerous times before the pair divorced.

It could very well be that these were just poor matches, couples never meant to go the distance. After all, people get together and break up all the time. But, I wouldn’t be willing to take the chance — especially not with the current astrological climate. The jury is still out on whether or not Taylor Swift will attend the Met Gala with Travis Kelce — I’d skip it if I were him! Let Swift shine on her own at the Met, your relationship might be better for it longterm.

During the Met Gala, the moon will be in Leo and Virgo, which means there will be an extreme shift from exuberance to meditative. The thing about the moon in Virgo is that it is unreliable and can go either way. The concern is that the moon in Virgo is activating the South Node in Virgo, making breakups and shakeups more of a fated conclusion. Yikes! But, I want to be clear that there is another aspect happening that may bode well. Being that Mercury in Aries harmonizes with expansive Jupiter in Gemini, couples might be more fortunate than in other years.
