For those seeking the pinnacle of exclusivity, the Penthouse Suite redefines opulence. Occupying the 32nd and 33rd floors, and spanning an extraordinary 22,000 square feet, it is less a suite and more a private residence in the sky. A private elevator opens into a grand marble foyer, leading into an expansive open-concept living and dining space, its velvet furnishings, contemporary art, and 360-degree skyline views worthy of a private soirée.
The saying goes, that in Houston, the food is flavoured by its residents. The city’s culinary scene is diverse, offering a rich tapestry of flavours influenced by its dynamic melting pot of cultures. At Emma Jane, I’m enveloped in vintage charm within a repurposed house, where fresh flowers add a delicate touch, and fine porcelain china lends an air of graceful hospitality. Afternoon tea is a highlight, paired with rare teas like white mango pear and honeysuckle fig. Dining here feels like being in the home of a friend who just happens to be an exceptional chef. For something more opulent, Musaafer transported me to Maharaja’s palace with its soaring arches, chandeliers, and intricate carvings. The Michelin-starred menu took me on a journey through India’s diverse culinary regions, where each dish is artfully plated and packed with history.
At The Annie Café & Bar, I am greeted by white-washed walls, antique light fixtures and a bright open space. The menu features classic American dishes reimagined with bold Texan flavours. The bar, dressed in gold and marble, is a highlight, serving inventive cocktails. But the best surprise lies behind the kitchen, with a hidden speakeasy that hosts live music in an intimate setting. Loro is where Texas barbecue meets bold Asian flavours. Housed in a converted church, the space is bright and open, with long picnic-style tables and an industrial-chic aesthetic. Must-try sharables include brisket queso, sweet corn fritters, and smoked baby pork ribs.
If you’re a fan of chocolate and cocktails (who isn’t?), Case Chocolate is a must-visit. Their 90-minute tasting takes place in an intimate speakeasy-style setting. Handcrafted chocolates are infused with bold, unexpected flavours and come paired with a cocktail designed to elevate the taste. In the heart of River Oaks, you will find Bari Ristorante, a refined Italian eatery. Its interiors are sleek and warm, with copper accents, tall ceilings, and a striking bar. I began with an avocado crab cake, light, crisp, and subtly seasoned followed by the house-made pappardelle Bolognese, featuring a hearty three-meat ragù and delicate shavings of parmesan. At Urbe, I’m greeted by a space that’s playful and vibrant, with bright murals, open counters, and a friendly vibe. The tacos here are the stars, packed with perfectly seasoned meats like pork, fish, or octopus, topped with vibrant salsas and pickled vegetables.
Full from tasting the city’s incredible flavours, I turned my attention to fashion and the finer things, ready to explore the sophisticated side of Houston. Located within Houston’s most prestigious enclave, River Oaks Shopping District is a sophisticated blend of high fashion, fine dining, and polished leisure. As I strolled its tree-lined promenades, I felt a distinctive fusion of London’s Bond Street and Southern charm, which creates an effortlessly cosmopolitan vibe.
