Yes, you can wear your boxer shorts out-out.
Heat wave dressing is no mean feat. What does one wear when the temperatures soar above 30 and the thought of trousers makes you sweat? Enter: boxer shorts.
Wearing your undies out is not necessarily a new trend—Miu Miu’s micro shorts have been making the rounds the last few seasons with leggy fashion girlies flaunting their limbs in shorts so tiny the under-pockets stick out. Then the bubble skirt gave way to bubble shorts that look more like bloomers, favoured by those Euro summer-bound vintage fans. Now, all the coolest girls are borrowing another piece from the bedroom and this time, they’re a little more universally flattering.

The boxer shorts, like the name suggests, are often made from cotton poplin, in the same material as pyjamas and found in solid colours or pinstripe. Their appeal lies in their comfort, obviously, but also their versatility. When worn with the right top and shoes, they could even be office-friendly.
Don’t believe us? The fashion set have been demonstrating how to dress up the boxer shorts all over fashion week. The easiest way, of course, involves a matching, oversized shirt. In a bright hue like tomato red or navy blue, you would avoid looking too much like you’ve just rolled out of bed. Colour is key. If you can reflect the colour of your shorts somewhere else in the look, be it in a matching shoe, or even sunglasses, the outfit will look more intentional.

Then there’s the top. Our favourite influencers have shown that the way to elevate the humble boxer short is with a more formal top. Often that means throwing over a blazer (for those of you looking to wear this trend to work) but when it’s absolutely sweltering, it could be replaced with a crisp, structured shirt or a top with interesting details. Whatever you do, do not pair with an old T-shirt or tank top if you’re going for fashion-forward. Then again, if you’re just headed to a picnic in the park? Go for it. Add a cap and lean into the summer of sport. But the easiest way to still look put-together is to throw on a pair of heels. Even a tiny kitten heel will go a long way in adding a touch of formality to the look.
