It looks like Anne Hathaway’s rigorous pop-star training had a lasting effect on her personal style.
For those who don’t know, the actor recently embodied a pop star for David Lowery’s upcoming A24 film Mother Mary, which will feature music written by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. And while the 42-year-old’s character has been described as a “Gaga–Taylor Swift hybrid” attempting to find herself within the dark confines of fame, Hathaway’s latest paparazzi photos had me asking, “Is that Olivia Rodrigo?”
Recently, Hathaway was photographed leaving a meeting in New York City wearing a cropped white T-shirt with Thom Browne’s drop-back pleated miniskirt and chunky Mary Jane heels. Hathaway held a blue plaid shirt in one hand, finishing off the look with a bold blue shoulder bag, classic black sunglasses, and a smattering of rings. The miniskirt itself featured a longer hem in the back like a sartorial take on a mullet.

Though Taylor Swift knows her way around a pleated miniskirt, this particular outfit combo screams Olivia Rodrigo. While promoting her album Guts in 2023, Rodrigo developed a signature uniform out of graphic T-shirts and miniskirts, often balancing these looks with ’90s grunge references and sweet feminine details. While the 22-year-old’s style continues to evolve beyond this dress code, each of these pieces remain key elements of her wardrobe.

Now, it seems celebrity stylist Erin Walsh has adapted this formula to suit Anne Hathaway, down to the stacks of rings on her bare-manicured hands. Of course, Hathaway cut through some of the inherent teenage angst by opting for a simple white T-shirt and a skirt with a longer hemline that’s still visually intriguing and playful.
Of course, I covet pretty much anything Anne Hathaway puts on her body lately, from her baby blue leather trench to her cutout chainlink jeans. Whether or not this look was an intentional nod to the “Vampire” singer, I can’t wait to see how Anne Hathaway truly channels a modern pop star in Mother Mary—and what she wears when it’s time to promote the film in earnest.
