Have you ever been single and felt like the world was made for couples, leaving you out in the cold? The Lobster, from Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, takes that concept to an extreme, imagining a society in which people are required to be coupled off or be transformed into animals. Colin Farrell stars as David, a man whose wife recently left him for another man.
He is taken to a hotel where he has 45 days to find a mate, but he soon finds a connection with an outsider (Rachel Weisz) who is part of a group of rebels outside the hotel. Clever and dry wit is the hallmark of this unforgettable movie, an inventive satire that you’ll love talking about after it’s over.
Based on true events, the moving Oscar-nominated movie Sing Sing takes place at New York’s famous prison and follows a group of inmates (many of whom are portrayed by real-life formerly incarcerated men) participating in the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program, which aims to use theater as a form of rehabilitation. John “Divine G” Whitfield (Colman Domingo) falls in love with the program and finds solace in playwriting.
He clashes with another inmate, Divine Eye (Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, a real former RTA participant), but they learn to work together in order to put on an original comedy with their fellow inmates. Moving, heartfelt, funny and tragic, Sing Sing is both an indictment of American prisons and a tribute to those who have survived them.
Josh and Benny Safdie, the directors of Uncut Gems, helm this film about the Nikas brothers: small-time criminal Constantine “Connie” (Robert Pattinson) and developmentally disabled Nikolas “Nick” (Benny Safdie). When a series of mishaps lands Nick in police custody, Connie attempts to get bail money for his brother, drowning himself in further debt and trouble in the process.
The Safdies have a reputation for making very stressful films, and Good Time is no exception, but Pattinson’s performance elevates it far above the traditional crime drama. It’s a visceral and frenetic movie that pits brotherly love against the realities of an unforgiving system. For fans of gritty, pulse-pounding cinema, it’s a can’t-miss gem.
