How to Do a Séance

Halloween merges the world of the living and the dead. October 31 and November 1 are the times of the year when we have an easier chance of forming an affiliation with the other side. Of course, that means many will try to thin that veil, holding séances to communicate with spirits. But before you start summoning the ghost of your great grandmother, there are a few things you must know. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering how to do a séance, look no further. From rules to rituals, I’ll explain how to talk to spirits safely.

Before we begin, it’s important to note that the first time a séance is held, it can be challenging to actually communicate with the spirits. Even if you’re a seasoned pro, reaching the other side isn’t instant — it takes a moment to forge a connection and to build a bridge. To set yourself up for success, cleanse yourself by taking an Epsom salt bath, spraying Florida water on and around you, and smudging yourself with sage before you start your séance. You want to have a clear channel between you and the other side without your extra baggage attached. Be present.

It’s advisable to hold a séance in a group of three which means that you all have to be invested and attentive. There can be uncertainty on both sides of the veil, which means that giving all of your energy is required. Turn your phones off, light candles, and make sure you’re all vibing on the same frequency. Though you do want a group for a séance, make sure your table isn’t too crowded. Add extra space for the spirits to sit at the table. Consider looking back to the Victorian romantic rooms created for séances. They usually used an oak table with candelabras and incense to boost the room’s psychic power, so add that to the list. A round table is essential to ensure that everybody can hold hands and create an energetic exchange. To boost vitality, consider adding a tablecloth in the color the deceased who you’re calling would like. Also, welcome them in to the area with kind words and state what you wish to discuss with them.

It is important to note that the spirits aren’t necessarily going to talk to you immediately — you might even pick up on some familiar smells to sense their presence. For instance, my grandfather smoked a specific cigarette brand. When I am conducting medium sessions, I can often smell them in the background. When the spirits decide to communicate, they may not be saying exactly what you want to hear — it could be someone completely different altogether who sits at the table and spills the tea. The point is to be open to anything or anyone.
