I don’t throw around the word ‘hero piece’ lightly – but if I had to pick one, it would definitely be a pair of the best wide-leg trousers. After years of trying on every trouser style under the sun, I can say without a doubt that my go-to forever-favourite is the wide-leg. My capsule wardrobe would be incomplete without them.
At Copenhagen Fashion Week this January, they were the base of virtually every effortless outfit we saw. From red trews to stripe styles, and classic black and grey, they hold their own when it comes to street style looks because they’re both effortless, trendy and – crucially – comfortable.
In fact, for many women, I believe that this is why they’re so popular; they are the sartorial equivalent of a pair of joggers.
Designers haven’t shied away from the silhouette for SS25, either. Marc Jacobs, in his ongoing mission to liberate women’s wardrobes, presented countless versions of loose-fitting pants with exaggerated hips styled with sculptural tops in vibrant hues. Giorgio Armani tucked neutral wide-leg trousers into riding boots, and Peter Do and Victoria Beckham modernised the workwear look with low-rise iterations and turned-down waists.
How do you style wide-leg trousers in 2025?
Beyond being a simple solution for office dressing, eveningwear and any weekend wardrobe, wide-leg pants are the perfect match for updating all the pieces in your wardrobe. Not unlike wide-leg jeans or even barrel leg jeans, they pair well with cosy knits and outerwear favourites like blazers, trench coats and denim jackets for the ultimate cool girl look while it’s cooler, or white T-shirts and shirts as it starts to warm up. Take the COS wide-leg trousers, for example; the fashion set can’t stop wearing those.
It-girl Hailey Bieber is constantly papped in loose trousers, too – she just recently wore a wide-leg pair on consecutive days while in New York – and Billie Eilish even donned some to the 67th GRAMMY Awards.
