Oversized suits have been reigning in the menswear sphere for quite a few years right now, but the menswear staple has slowly but surely transitioned into the womenswear realm to become one of the hottest transitional trends of 2025.
Though we love to make fun of a man wearing a suit to a red carpet, the appeal of a good suit is undeniable. Not only is it a classic look, but it also saves you a lot of time coming up with an outfit formula — kind of like a uniform, but much more stylish.
Let’s talk suits…
What’s different about the oversized suit trend in 2025?
Though we have seen women gravitate towards suits for years now, the 2025 take on this trend does things a bit differently by not only subverting the tailoring of the classic piece for a looser fitting one but also incorporating elements of classic suiting attire, like ties, to the mix.
For example, in previous years, we had seen iterations of this trend where the suit was the focal point of the ‘fit, but the rest of the elements veered more casual. Take, for example, Hailey Bieber pairing her pinstripe suit with a grey crop top, Dua Lipa skipping the shirt altogether, or Emily Ratajkowski opting for a suit vest sans shirt.
While making the suit casual was the whole point of the trend in 2022 and 2023, in 2025, we are elevating it as much as we can. Think of Bille Eilish on the cover of Vogue wearing Gucci and Bottega Veneta. Or BLACKPINK’s Rosé in her GQ Korea spread, in which she wears not one, not two, but three completely different suits — all Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, since she’s a brand ambassador. Basically, throw it all the way back to 1990 and picture Julia Roberts at the 47th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
How to style oversized suits in 2025
All in all, the best way to style an oversized suit in 2025 is to fully go for it and commit, adding a poplin shirt and a tie to your look. The aforementioned Billie Eilish and Rosé examples might have been editorial suits, but we’ve already seen a slew of celebrities adopt this style on the streets as well, including Hailey Bieber, Ariana Grande, Ayo Edebiri, Iris Law, and more.
Since the idea is to commit to a suit and tie moment, you’ll need to rely on other elements to soften (or strenghten) the look and break up the proportions. Shoes-wise, the safest and classiest options are pointed-toe heels or kitten-heel sandals that will poke through the cascading pants. To take it the extra mile, match the shoes to your suit and, like Hailey Bieber, add a pop of color by adding a clutch that perfectly matches your tie. If you really want to make a statement, be like Doechii and use a shorter pants to make your shoes just as much of a protagonist. For a more traditional styling take, loafers or brogues like Ayo Edebiri’s will keep the look rooted in its menswear elements.
