The former first lady appeared on Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast, where she addressed speculation about her marital problems, among other things. Michelle told Bush that she could now control her social life and calendar according to her preferences and make it look like “whatever” she wanted. “I chose to do what was best for me,” the mom of two remarked.

It’s been eight years since former President Barack Obama left the White House, and now Michelle is revealing what her life looks like amid divorce rumors. Michelle Obama quite notably took a step back from the limelight, as she skipped Donald Trump’s inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in January. Her hiatus from political events, which her husband attended solo, raised speculation about possible marital problems between the couple, and she was all about addressing them in the “Work in Progress” podcast.
Michelle cleared up that her recent absences have been because she is making “a choice” for herself now that she has full control of her calendar. “Now I can’t blame my decisions and indecisions on anyone other than me,” she shared, claiming how she could “have made a lot of these decisions years ago” but didn’t give herself the “freedom.” However, things have since changed for the author, who even got “to look at my calendar.” This allowed her to “chose to do what was best for me” instead of leaning into other people’s expectations.
Nevertheless, Michelle Obama believes women often struggle with “disappointing people” to the extent that her saying “no” or making choices for herself raised rumors about her and Barack Obama’s divorce. “I think we struggle with disappointing people,” she said, noting that people couldn’t “fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.” She cleared up that her break from the public eye was just “a grown woman just making a set of decisions.”
