Hear me out: no footwear collection is complete without a pair of boat shoes, especially for autumn. Long associated with preppy style, the flats are currently enjoying a high-fashion rebrand — and they’re making a compelling case as true autumn capsule wardrobe essentials. (And as I can personally attest, most pairs are more supportive and walking-friendly than your standard loafers or ballet flats.)
The footwear trend’s high-fashion revival kicked off a few seasons ago, when Miu Miu and Bally showed extra-svelte takes on dock shoes, which are characterised by leather laces that wrap around the sides. Although they originated as working footwear — rubber outsoles, tough leather, and a foot-hugging design are great for seafarers — these updated versions take cues from loafers and moccasins for a slimmer look. Once synonymous with Ivy League style, as outlined by The Official Preppy Handbook, boat shoes are now more likely to identify you as a member of the fashion crowd.
Like many people, I was initially sceptical, but after wearing a Vince pair, I was immediately sold. They have a slimmer profile than my usual loafers, plus slightly more cushioning and softer leather, making them perfect for walking around New York. I also love that, because they’re a little unexpected, they can instantly elevate an uninspired look: My transitional outfit formula is a long-sleeve top, at-the-knee shorts, crew socks, and the shoes, which never fail to garner a compliment or two. If only I had a dollar for every “Who makes them?” I get from friends and passersby.
So yes, styling boat shoes is easier than it seems. I love how my black pair looks with black trousers and white socks; up top, you can try a matching blazer, a ribbed tank top, a baggy sweatshirt, or a romantic blouse. The shoes also look great with a sharp shirt dress. Throw in an architectural bag or a pair of statement sunglasses to avoid going full Charlotte York — unless that’s the point.
And it’s not just me. I’ve convinced multiple people to give the fashion trend a go, and the feedback has been definitively positive. (One friend invested in the Scarosso loafers below and has been wearing them absolutely everywhere.)
There’s a pair for every style and price point in my edit, which spans suede picks from Free People, iconic leather snake boat shoes from & Other Stories, and high-end gems stocked at Net-A-Porter. Even Sperry, which popularised the original boat shoes, has introduced an updated silhouette. Be not afraid — pick up a pair now and you’ll officially be a trendsetter.
