A certain Mango jacket is doing the rounds on social media right now – and despite being less than £150 (!), it’s easily the most expensive-looking high-street drop I’ve seen all season.
That’s my main criteria when I’m shopping the high-street: if my very fashionable friends wouldn’t agree the piece could pass as designer, I won’t be spending my money on it. It sounds simple, granted – but from wool coats to jeans and blazers, if it doesn’t look expensive, it’s not coming home with me. Such a tactic has helped me avoid wasting a significant amount of money.
I centred myself around the same guiding star when shopping for a suede jacket earlier this month. Experiencing something of a revival thanks to the fabric’s appearances on Ralph Lauren and Hermès’ AW25 runways, suede jackets are to fall what a floaty dress is to summer. That is: a wardrobe staple which should be purchased with care. I wasn’t just going to go out and pick any old bomber.
That said, I don’t have a designer budget – so I practically jumped for joy when I realised that the beautiful Mango jacket all the London cool-girls had been wearing last year was back in stock. And not actually too pricey?
Yep: right now isn’t the first time this epic Mango buy has been everywhere. Cast your minds back to last autumn, and the Spanish label dropped a chocolate-brown version, which quickly sold out. Editors wore it. Influencers wore it. Every other I passed on Oxford Street wore it. But I wasn’t fast enough.
So, you can imagine my excitement when I spotted that the jacket is back for AW25 – in not one, but two fresh new colour-ways. Black, from the monochrome dressers among you – and khaki. The cut of the jacket is straight, finished with metallic button closures, flap pockets, and a shirt-style collar.
I’d recommend sizing-up so that you can layer it atop jumpers and cardigans – and styling it with anything from leather trousers to baggy jeans or leather skirts. I wrote a guide on how to style leather skirts the other day.
As for how to keep it looking fresh all season? Don’t wear it in the rain, if you can avoid it – and if you do get marks on it, use a soft suede brush to buff out marks.
