Warning: This article contains Squid Game season one spoilers.
Squid Game season 2 is finally here. Dropping on Netflix this Boxing Day, we already know it’s going to be perfect for that post-Christmas watch.
Season 1 was released on 17 September 2021, and the Korean thriller was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Best Drama Series – a first for a non-English language title – and won six. We have no doubt that season 2 will hit just as hard.
Not only was the show a critical hit, it was really, really popular, with the first season being described by Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarando as the streaming platform’s “biggest show ever.” It’s easy to see why – the concept was completely fascinating, and each episode left us quite literally on the edge of our seats.
The first season saw 456 players, all in debt, enter into a contest to fight it out for a huge cash prize. On the surface, the competition seemed like a series of simple children’s games, however contestants soon realised that losing a game also meant losing your life. Of all 456 players, only one winner survived. At the end of season 1, our hero, Seong Gi-hun, made the decision to head back into the arena to end the games once and for all.
