The Substance is undoubtedly one of the most talked about films of 2024. It spawned countless memes thanks to its grotesque and – at times – vomit-inducing surrealism. It’s wild and iconic, but also addresses very real and important themes of sexism, ageism, self-worth and the pressure to maintain societal beauty standards.
It’s a body horror film (so be warned) that follows a once-celebrated star (played by Demi Moore) who turns to a black-market drug: a cell-replicating formula that temporarily transforms her into a younger, more radiant version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). With a blend of suspense and emotional depth, The Substance takes a hard look at society’s obsession with beauty and age, and the lengths one woman will go to in order to recapture her former glory.
The Substance is available to stream on Mubi and available to rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video

Timothée Chalamet seems to be everywhere at the moment. From that lookalike contest to starring in not one but two of the films that have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in 2025. Dune: Part Two is touted as an “epic space opera film” (at nearly three hours, epic is right) and stars Chalamet alongside fellow Gen Z heartthrob Austin Butler, with Florence Pugh and Zendaya completing the all-star cast.
The second instalment of this science fiction blockbuster follows Paul Atreides (played by Chalamet) as he joins forces with Chani (played by Zendaya) and the Fremen as he sets out to avenge those who shattered his family. Torn between his deep love for Chani and the weighty responsibility of saving the universe, Paul must navigate a future only he can see, where the stakes are higher than ever.
